Chesterfield team wins league title
BRATTLEBORO >> The Chesterfield Middle School girls soccer team went 13-1-1 during the regular season to win the league championship, including 4-0-1 in the Westmoreland Tournament for a fourth title in five years.
"They stuck together, never hung their heads, learned to believe in themselves and became gritty task masters on the field. What has been their hallmark, and was again the cornerstone of this year's team, was their very unselfish team play," said CMS coach Jay VanStechelman. "Every aspect of their on-field play — offense, defense and goaltending — improved over the year from last year to this year. They took instruction well, worked hard in practice and games, and were a group that was able to laugh as hard as they worked, making them a pleasure to watch."
The team went into the season with high expectations because of several talented veterans. Those eighth graders include Olivia Auger, Alexa Barnes, Tayler Card, Hallie Fournier, Olivia Hewey, Aubrey Mitchell, Makayla Panzer, Emily Richardson, Rachael Rooney and Megan Willard.
"I have said this in past years too, but when I think of the leadership and maturity level that I saw in these girls, especially my 8th graders, I found it both remarkable and also rare in this day and age. I guess we have a strong culture working for us here now, but they truly understood what being a team was all about, and that it was as a team that we met our challenges and also our goals," stated coach VanStechelman. "I said to my team many times that I was both lucky and very proud to be their coach, something I can honestly say about all the teams I have coached here over the past six years. Thank you girls for the cherished memories of yet another great season! Good luck to all of our parting eighth graders."
