Chicken Barbecue in West Brattleboro
WEST BRATTLEBORO - A Chicken BBQ will be sponsored by the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) on Saturday, Oct. 12, starting at 11 a.m. and lasting until gone. The Chicken BBQ held earlier this year was a sell-out by noon, so the WBA is increasing the number of chickens it barbecues along with the amount of baked beans and cole slaw. However, we suggest you plan to get to the event in West Brattleboro in front of the First Congregational Church on Western Avenue in plenty of time to enjoy the chicken and fixin’s. There will also be a bake sale sponsored by the Church.
For $5 you can get half a barbecued chicken, or you can enjoy a dinner with sides of homemade baked beans and cole slaw for $8. The recipes used to make these goodies have a local history. The chicken barbecue sauce recipe is one used by the Guilford Fair Fireman’s BBQ, cooked up for many years by Joe Jewett when he was a member of the fire department. The baked beans offered with the chicken are an old Thurber farm recipe. Marjorie Thurber’s Home Baked Beans have been a staple on Ames Hill for many years, and her daughter Helen Robb is carrying on the tradition. She says this recipe appeared in Great New England Recipes, a cookbook published by Yankee Magazine in 1983 when she and her mother-in-law (Bertha Robb) were featured along with other New England cooks. So you can see, this is a real down-home West Brattleboro Chicken BBQ.
What could be better than a half chicken with homemade baked beans and cole slaw? Then add a tasty dessert from the First Congregational Church bake sale. So, save the date: Saturday, Oct. 12, 11 a.m. until all the victuals are gone!
Proceeds from the BBQ help the West Brattleboro Association with its many activities for the community!
