COLLECTION OF THEATER SCRAPBOOKS ON EXHIBIT AT BROOKS LIBRARY
BRATTLEBORO -- The Brooks Memorial Library features an exhibit titled "The Theatre Scrapbooks of Jessica Baylis Bousfield" on the second floor exhibit cases through February.
Jessica Baylis Bousfield, 1891-1996, was a part-time resident of Dummerston. As a young woman in her 20s she was devoted to the theater, attending many plays where she collected playbills and reviews for the five volumes of scrapbooks she created.
The scrapbook and diary entries were done between the years of 1912-33 when she was 21 to 42 years old.
Bousfield and her husband Harold purchased about 100 acres of land in Dummerston in 1939, and lived there part time until 1970, when Harold died. They also resided in Arizona, where at Chochise College a scholarship in Jessica’s name is awarded annually to students in the visual arts.
Because the scrapbooks do not fit with the library’s collections’ policies, after the exhibit is over the Fine Arts committee will locate a research institution that might want them for their collections and be able to provide the conservation that these objects require.
