Colonel girls deny BBA


MANCHESTER >> The Brattleboro Union High School varsity girls basketball team held Burr and Burton to just four field goals in the second half en route to a 56-37 victory over the host Bulldogs.

Leading 28-22 at the intermission, the Colonels exploded for 22 points in the third quarter to increase their lead to 20.

"This group keeps working very hard and is improving every time out on the court," said BUHS coach Paul Freed.

Devin Millerick, who drained two trifectas during the third-quarter surge, paced the purple and white with 15 points and six rebounds. Meghan Sargent (7 points, 6 rebounds), Dani Wood (8 rebounds, 2 blocks), Shenise Taliaferro (6 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks) and defensive dandy Megyn Ayotte all played well off the bench.

The 7-11 Colonels will host Rutland on Monday evening at 7, which is Brattleboro's Senior Night.

TOWNSHEND >> Leland & Gray outscored Woodstock, 39-30, on Thursday night to claim the Marble Valley League's C Division championship.

"A great defensive effort by Maris Linder and an offensive spark by Kelsi Bostrom ignited a 15-6 fourth quarter to seal the win," said Rebels coach Terry Merrow, whose team trailed 16-14 at the break.

Caroline Tietz (12 points), Rachel Borgesen (11) and Hannah Buffum (10) were the top guns for the Rebels, who will face Poultney on Thursday.
