Colonels advance to Division 1 finals
COLCHESTER -- The third-seeded Brattleboro softball team advanced to the Division 1 title game with a 3-0 victory over No. 2 Colchester in Wednesday’s semifinal.
Brattleboro’s Kayla Wood and Colchester’s Emi Eakin cruised through the first six innings, yielding five hits and no walks between them in that time. And then the Colonels put up three unearned runs in the top of the seventh.
Haley Struthers started it by reaching on a two-base error. Pinch-runner Alex Derosia went to third on Wood’s sacrifice. After Lou Lou Terwilliger walked, Rissa Smith came through with a Texas Leaguer and then Alyssa Bezanson delivered a two-run single through the left side.
"She saw the ball well and hit it between short and third," said BUHS coach Kelly Markol. "She hit the ball hard."
Wood then ended it by fanning two and inducing a ground out. She walked one, allowed three hits and sat down eight on the day.
"At this time, when you get to the semis and finals, it takes a mistakeŠ and if the other team can capitalize on the mistake, then they’re in pretty good shape. And then we have a kid come up and hit a single with two runners on. Huge. Huge," said Markol.
It was the third consecutive shutout in these playoffs for Wood, who improved to 12-1 in the circle during the postseason over her four-year varsity career. She helped the Colonels win it all in 2010 and 2011.
Markol said she did not believe Wood threw as hard Wednesday as in earlier games, adding, "but she threw the ball well."
Smith went 2-for-3 to lead the winners offensively. Bailey Paige and Bezanson each hit safely.
Brattleboro (16-2-1) must await the results of two games before learning its championship game opponent. No. 5 Missisquoi is scheduled to travel to No. 4 Mount Anthony for a quarterfinal today, though predicted rain could force another postponement until Saturday. The winner of that game will face top-seeded Essex in the other semifinal with the Colonels eventually playing that winner for the title.
