Colonels are off to a 3-1 start

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Union High School varsity softball team won three of its first four games and trails just undefeated Essex, BFA-St. Albans, North Country and Colchester in the Division 1 standings.

The Colonels tallied twice in the first frame on Saturday and went on to beat Otter Valley, 2-1. Jamie Mahoney tripled, Lauren McKenney singled, and Bridget Duff drove in what would turn out to be the game-winning run. Hannah Wilson, Hailey Derosia, Jocelyn Aither, Mahoney, McKenney and Duff all finished with one hit. Wilson fanned eight, walked just one and scattered three hits to pick up the victory.

"She was definitely tough when she needed to be. She pitched a nice game for sure," said BUHS coach Kelly Markol.

Brattleboro's lone blemish is a 4-2 loss to Wahconah that took place in the Bay State on Friday. Duff had a pair of hits to lead the purple and white, who managed one run in the fourth frame and another in the seventh. Wilson struck out seven, walked four and allowed six hits.

Prior to that, the Colonels racked up 20 hits in a 21-4 rout of Windsor. Derosia's solo homer was the biggest blow, while Mahoney, Wilson, McKenney, Aither, Mariah Powers and Sylvia Patenaude all had multiple hits for the winners. Derosia, Waite, Duff, Devin Millerick and Nicolette Rivas all hit safely. Wilson and Aither took turns in the circle, combining for seven K's, five base on balls and a five-hitter.
