Colonels debut at Rutland on Friday

BRATTLEBORO >> The Brattleboro Union High School varsity boys tennis team, which didn't lose any players from last year's group to graduation, is hoping to qualify for the Division 1 Tournament for the first time since 2013.

"I'm looking forward to a successful season," said BUHS coach Charlie La Rosa. "We have many new, young, talented players. We should have good depth. I'm seeing lots of improvement already."

Spencer Butter, Zeb Hathaway, Gideon May, Alex Shuey, Martin Sipowicz, Jack Spanierman, and Tom Szpila are the returning varsity players for the Colonels, who will open up at Rutland on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

"They will be fighting it out for spots in the top five singles rotation. Some of the sophomores and freshmen may challenge the veterans for one or more of those top singles spots," noted La Rosa. "There is a keen competition developing for the two doubles teams. The depth is very good, so we will have to shuttle players in and out from match to match depending on who is playing at their peak.

The Brattleboro coach is excited about the addition of senior Oliver Goodman.

"He is a very strong and experienced player," stated La Rosa.

The home opener for the purple and white is scheduled for Monday, April 11, at 4:30 p.m., against rival MAU. The Colonels will then host Bellows Falls on April 13 at 4:30 p.m.
