Colonels get first win
NEWPORT >> Axis Balsley-Petraska racked up four goals and one assist to lead the Brattleboro Union High School varsity girls ice hockey team to an 11-1 rout of defending Division 2 champion North Country on Saturday.
"A great all-around effort. BUHS has been working hard all season and it is great for them to be reaping some rewards," said Colonels coach Linda Burke, whose team improved to 1-4-1 overall.
Jamie Mahoney added one goal and three assists for the winners. Emma Rueter and Sarah LaPorte (1 assist) each tallied twice, while Emily Martyn chipped in with one goal and one dime.
"Although she didn't see a lot of shots overall, Keagan Jameson made a couple of sharp saves in the first," noted Burke.
The Colonels opened up a 3-0 advantage in the first period, thanks to goals from Martyn, LaPorte and Rueter. Balsley-Petraska, who made it 4-0 with a second-period burial, netted three goals during a four-minute span in the final frame. And Emma Allen split the posts for her first high school goal late in the contest.
The Colonels will play at U-32 on Wednesday.
