Colonels off to a 2-1 start


BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Union High School varsity softball team, which won three of the last four Division 1 state championships, is off to a 2-1 start this season.

Sophomore pitcher Hannah Wilson fanned three and walked zero as the Colonels clobbered visiting Otter Valley, 7-1, in Thursday’s opener. Devin Millerick and Daisy Giroux each had a pair of hits in that contest, Millerick drove in four runs, and left fielder Casey Manning had the defensive highlight -- a tremendous running catch in the sixth inning.

Jess Ogden, Siera Butler, Maddy Derosia and Millerick all had two hits in Brattleboro’s 12-1 rout of Rutland on Saturday. Wilson, taking over for graduated star Kayla Wood, struck out five in just the second varsity start of her career.

On Monday, the Colonels fell to Drury of Massachusetts, 7-5. Maddy Derosia led the Brattleboro attack with two hits.

Brattleboro (2-1) will host St. Johnsbury on Saturday at 11 a.m.
