Colonels, Terriers to play host Saturday

BRATTLEBORO >> Saturday is officially Punctuation Day according to, and I'm looking forward to several football questions being answered when Bellows Falls hosts Mount Mansfield at 1 p.m. and Brattleboro welcomes South Burlington at 3 p.m.

1. Is Brattleboro's defense for real?

After giving up 423 rushing yards to Hartford in the season opener and then letting Saint Johnsbury quarterback Collin Urie run for 168 yards in Week 2, the Colonels got a pair of interceptions from Matt Gaboriault and a pick six by Conor Hiner in a 28-13 decision over Middlebury.

2. Is Cheick Diakite a superhero?

Brattleboro's senior running back carried the ball 18 times for 113 yards and two scores versus the Hilltoppers, before racking up 243 yards and three touchdowns to help end Middlebury's streak of 28 straight regular-season wins. His combination of power and speed is a thing of beauty.

3. Which Tony Martinez will show up?

The BUHS quarterback threw for just 21 yards in his team's home opener. The expected sell-out crowd on Homecoming Weekend will be hoping for something more like the performance No. 5 had against rival MAU last season — a pair of TD passes and a sneak to the house to ignite a comeback from a dozen points down.

4. Just how good is Bellows Falls?

The cupcake schedule has come to an end. It will be interesting to see if interior linemen such as Brady Illingworth, DJ Snide and Devon Hardy can continue to dominate in the trenches against a team that just upset Division 1 BFA-Saint Albans.

5. How many points will be scored?

The Terriers put up 49 last week against North Country and the Cougars hung 40 on the Bobwhites, so there's a chance of us seeing 100 total at Hadley Field. BF workhorse Jahyde Bullard ran for 153 yards and two scores last week, while Asa Carlson threw for 157 yards and three TD's for Mount Mansfield.
