Colonels to host Hilltoppers Friday night

Posted
BRATTLEBORO — Twenty-seven years after undefeated boxer Mike Tyson was knocked out by 42-to-1 underdog Buster Douglas in Tokyo, the Brattleboro Union High School varsity football team will be looking to pull off a shocking upset of its own.

The winless Colonels, who have played a brutal early schedule, will face their toughest test yet when hosting Saint Johnsbury (5-0) on Friday night at 7.

The Hilltoppers have outscored their foes by a combined 163-76. Quarterback Jake Cady has thrown for 853 yards, receiver Jasper Rankin already has 34 catches, and running back Mathew Roy has reached the house four times.

After putting up 29 points against defending Division 2 champion Bellows Falls and hanging 33 points on reigning D-1 champion Hartford, Brattleboro seems perfectly capable of winning a shootout. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Millerick fired TD strikes to three different receivers — Jeremy Rounds, Kris Carroll, Chris Frost — in Westminster and hooked up with Brenden Gilbeau for a pair of scores through the air last week.

The Colonels, who have gotten interceptions from Kyle Derosia, Frost and Carroll this season, might need a turnover or two in order to have their arms raised at the end of this one. Cady, a junior, has thrown four picks this fall.

On Saturday at 3:30 p.m., Bellows Falls (4-1) will kick off at Mount Abraham (1-4).

Mount Abe is coming off of a 41-6 loss to Milton, which got 100 rushing yards and three scores from Seth Herrity. The boys from Bristol will now have to deal with BF's talented offensive line of Reno Tuttle, Jackson Brown, Gunnar Sawyer, Braden Maxfield and Jared Zobkiw — a unit that paved the way for 275 rushing yards in the first half of last week's rout of Otter Valley.

The Purple Gang has been led in tackles by McGregor Vancor and Dylan Clark the last two weeks respectively. Defensive linemen Andrew Kim (3 tackles for loss) and Sawyer (2 sacks) both brought their A game in Week 5.
