Communion Sunday observed this week at Dummerston Congregational Church

Saturday February 2, 2013

DUMMERSTON -- Feb. 3 is a Communion Sunday at the Dummerston Congregational Church. In Dummerston the communion tradition is one of an open table and all who seek to follow in the way of Jesus Christ and to walk in love and charity with their neighbor are warmly welcome to share in this sacrament of grace.

The Deacons Offering will go to the Deacons’ Fund to help Dummerston families with emergency needs. This fund has seen increased use this year. A special offering of cans of soup for the Drop-In Center will also be received for this "Souper Bowl" Sunday. People are also encouraged to bring a pot-ready addition to our Communal Soup for coffee hour and to stay for lunch. The scripture for Sunday is Luke 4: 1-13, the Temptation of Jesus and the Meditation: is "Tempted and Tried."

The Children’s story, "Glad and Generous Hearts" will focus on Acts 2: 44-47 and Acts 4: 32-35. Children will begin in worship and then go to an open classroom to work on some mission projects, including learning more about Kenya, the church school mission focus. Children are invited to talk with Pastor Susanna Griefen during coffee hour about the possibility of forming a children’s choir.

Non-perishable foods, toiletries, household items, blankets, tents and tarps for the Drop-In Center may be left in the church entry. A "Dove Board" with needed items for those living with HIV/AIDS is in the church entry. Items may be returned to the "Dove Basket."

A Contemplative Prayer Service is held in the sanctuary each Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. Dress warmly and join us for a time of shared silence and deep peace.

Games Night Friday, Feb. 8 will feature a "Vendredi Gras" supper of high-protein pancakes, hosted by the Youth Group, donations to the youth group gratefully accepted. Wear a Mardi Gras costume if you’d like and stay for games and puzzles. All are welcome.

The church is located in Dummerston Center, 1536 Middle Road. Dummerston Congregational Church UCC is a Green Justice Congregation of the United Church of Christ. Because the church is on the top of a mountain, worship and programs are canceled when driving is treacherous.

If worship is canceled, all events for that day are canceled. Check for cancellations on WTSA 96.7 FM or 1450 AM or WKVT local news, or contact the church to be added to a calling tree.
