BRATTLEBORO -- A Brattleboro man faces two felony charges for allegedly having a sexual relationship with an underage girl.

Patrick Devens, 25, of Clark Street, was arraigned this week on charges of sexual assault of victim less than 16 years old and lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.

He pleaded not guilty. The Windham County states attorney’s office requested that bail be imposed, but Devens was released from custody on several conditions including having no contact with the alleged victim and staying 300 feet away from her.

He also can have no contact with females under age 16. Devens must check in daily with Brattleboro police and must reside with his parents in Guilford.

Brattleboro police said they were called Nov. 21 to investigate a report of Devens having a relationship with a young girl. Two detectives found Devens and the girl together in bed, investigators wrote in an affidavit.

Subsequent interviews with Devens, the girl and others showed that the two had a relationship for several months, court papers state.

Devens knew the girl was less than 16 years old, and he admitted to having a sexual relationship with her, police said.

One acquaintance reported that the suspect restricted his interactions with the girl to his apartment "because Devens was skeptical what people would think if they did it in public," the affidavit says.

-- Also in Windham Superior Court Criminal Division, a Brookline woman has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and two counts of domestic assault in connection with an incident on Harris Hill Road.

Samantha Seals, 23, was placed on probation as Judge David Suntag imposed a suspended jail sentence of nine to 12 months.

Vermont state police said they responded to 911 calls from Seals’ home before 9 a.m. Oct. 21. Seals’ 46-year-old father reported that, after telling his daughter that she "needed to get into treatment," she became upset and tried to leave in a car that wasn’t hers, a court affidavit states.

Seals’ father disabled the car and his daughter "lost it," court papers state. In an ensuing struggle, Seals head-butted and bit her father, threw pumpkins, tried to attack him with a pickax and threatened the lives of her father and his girlfriend, court papers say.

Two neighbors also became involved when they tried to restrain Seals, police said.

-- Seals also is due back in court after being cited for noise in the nighttime during an unrelated incident.

State police said they responded at 2:33 a.m. Nov. 22 to a Grafton Road home in Townshend for a report of a possible family fight. Seals and "her house guest," 27-year-old Brandon Lee of Brattleboro, were "advised to call it a night and quiet down," police said.

Troopers said they had to return to the home later that morning for "loud noise and banging." Seals and Lee were cited and are scheduled to appear in court Dec. 31 for arraignment.
