SAXTONS RIVER -- Great weather and a great turnout made for some lively casting at the Saxtons River Rec’s annual fishing derby on Saturday. Rec committee member Samantha Fletcher reported 111 children registered to fish, with a chance to win one of nine trophies in three age groups. The trophies were sponsored by the Saxtons River Village Market and were accompanied by $10 gift cards that were donated by J&H Sporting Goods in Bellows Falls.

Winners of the derby were: Ages 4 to 6: First fish caught, Madison Duby; biggest fish, Leland Neathawk; most fish, Madison Duby. Ages 7 to 10: First fish, Tristan Izzy; biggest, Tyler Sprague; and most, Patrick Barbour. Ages 11 to 14: First fish, Aaliyah Jacobs; biggest, Cameron Purington; most, Nick Bashaw.

Each child registered for the derby was entered in a raffle to win one of two prizes. Bashaw won the $10 gift card, and Spencer Lockerby won the pole, reel and tackle set-up donated by J&H Sporting Goods. J&H is offering an entry into its fishing gear raffle for anyone who brings to its store a photo of a child with the fish he or she caught.
