Derry discovers new sport at next level
BRATTLEBORO — Adrienne Derry, a sophomore from Townshend, had 25 kills and 18 blocks this season for the 5-15 Johnson State College women's volleyball team.
She had a season-high three kills versus Lyndon State, Regis, Paul Smith's College, Castleton and Fort Kent. And she had a season-high three blocks in matches against Paul Smith's College and Newbury.
The six-foot tall middle blocker previously played varsity basketball at Leland & Gray under coach Gregg Morrow. As a high school senior, Derry played on the same hoops team as Stevie Roberts, Samantha Russ, Jacqueline Hazard, Callie Ginter, Alyson Marcucci, Alex Morrow, Chelby Nystrom, Chelsea Cox, Bethany Robinson, Ashley Goddard and Kate McAllister.
Here's a look at how other area athletes did at the college level this fall:
BECCA FREEMAN >> The 2015 Brattleboro Union High School graduate was the second Lyndon State College finisher in a time of 27:31 in Saturday's NCAA Cross Country Regional Championships on a 6K course in New London, Conn. She was also the second Hornet across the finish line in the conference championships.
EMILY THIBAULT >> The Williamsville resident is a freshman at Clark University and a member of the women's crew team, The Cougars began the season by taking 10th in the women's club 8 event on the Merrimack River. Leland & Gray graduate Abby Winrich is on the University of Vermont women's novice crew team.
SARAH WELLS >> In her first season with the Castleton field hockey team, the Bellows Falls grad scored a team-high eight goals and also dished out six assists. The Spartans wound up with a 4-12 mark.
SOREN PELZ-WALSH >> Brattleboro's former three-sport star led Castleton University's football team with 60 catches for 968 yards and seven touchdowns. The Spartans went 7-3, ending with a 31-13 rout of Norwich on Saturday.
TYLER HIGLEY >> After switching from quarterback to defensive back, the BUHS grad had seven interceptions during his junior season with Castleton. He also had 27 tackles and 11 pass breakups.
PATRICK GILLIGAN >> The Vernon resident finished fifth for Castleton in 29:13 in Saturday's New England Regional Cross Country Championships. The Spartans placed 34th out of 55 teams.
COLIN LOZITO >> The former Twin Valley standout started 15 games this season for the Norwich men's soccer team. The sophomore midfielder tallied twice, dished out three assists and took 21 total shots for the 12-8-1 Cadets.
RYAN GILLIGAN >> A freshman from Vernon, he was the seventh Norwich finisher and was clocked in 28:22 in Saturday's New England Regional Cross Country Championships. The Cadets placed 18th in the 55-team field.
COREY NYSTROM >> The Leland & Gray graduate scored three goals and added a team-high four assists for the 3-12 Johnson State College men's soccer team. William McCarthy and Connor Neathawk, both Bellows Falls grads, also played for the Badgers.
CHELBY NYSTROM >> The Leland & Gray graduate placed 84th in a time of 28:20 while running for the Johnson State women's cross-country team in the NAC Championships in Maine on Halloween. The Badgers wound up 10th in that event.
