Encore screening of 'Lulu' at the Latchis
BRATTLEBORO >> The Met: Live in HD continues tenth anniversary season with encore screening of "Lulu" at the Latchis Theatre, Dec. 5, 1 p.m. The Met: Live in HD continued its tenth anniversary season with a live transmission of Alban Berg's Lulu (running time four hours) with an estimated attendance of 45,000 in North America earning a gross of $900,000. It was seen live on more than 900 screens. An estimated additional 51,000 people saw it live on 800 screens in 35 countries in Europe, 11 countries in Latin America, Russia, Egypt, Israel, Jamaica, and Morocco. Delayed showings throughout Asia, Australia, Dubai, Madagascar, New Zealand and South Africa, and encore performances in North America and Europe, are expected to boost worldwide attendance of Lulu to more than 140,000.
William Kentridge, who made his Met debut in 2010 with an innovative staging of Shostakovich's The Nose, returns to the company with this new production of Lulu, Alban Berg's tragedY of a sexually irresistible woman who destroys the lives of everyone around her. Marlis Petersen, who has sung the role to great acclaim around the world, stars as the femme fatale. Susan Graham, who has sung over 20 different roles at the Met, adds a new role to her company repertory as the Countess Geschwitz, one of Lulu's most devoted admirers. Lulu's many victims include American tenor Daniel Brenna in his Met debut as Alwa; Paul Groves as the Painter and African Prince; Johan Reuter as Dr. Schön; and Franz Grundheber as Schigolch. Welsh National Opera music director Lothar Koenigs leads this performance. Kentridge's staging reunites the production team of The Nose, including co-director Luc De Wit, projection designer Catherine Meyburgh, scenic designer Sabine Theunissen, costume designer Greta Goiris, and lighting desiger Urs Schönebaum.
William Kentridge returns to the Met following his 2010 debut helming the company premiere of Shostakovich's The Nose. In 1998, Kentridge staged his first opera production, Monteverdi's Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria, which was presented at the Kunstenfestival des Arts in Brussels. Kentridge has also directed Mozart's The Magic Flute, which premiered at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels in 2005 and was later seen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The South African-born artist is known for combining drawing, animation, filmmaking, and collage. As one of the world's most preeminent visual artists, his work has been the subject of major gallery shows and museum retrospectives around the world. Most recently, he presented William Kentridge: Tapestries at Kewenig Galerie in Cologne, prints at the 2015 Royal Academy Summer Show, and The Nose at the Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich.
Luc de Wit previously co-directed The Nose at the Met with William Kentridge in 2009. Since 1995, de Wit has directed musical theater and opera, including Mozart's Zaïde for the Covent Garden Festival, Don Giovanni for the Music Hall/I Fiaminghi, and Pas de Cinq for Champs d'Action, among other productions. In 2013, he directed the chorus in Guy Cassier's production of Götterdämmerung at the Berlin State Opera as a co-production with La Scala. He has collaborated with William Kentridge since 2005, directing the revivals of Kentridge's productions, including The Magic Flute and Il Ritorno d'Ulisse Catherine Meyburgh has worked extensively with William Kentridge over the course of twenty-five years. Among her projects with Kentridge are The Nose, Breathe, Woyzeck on the Highveld, The Magic Flute, Five Themes, and I am not me, the horse is not mine. She has been working in film for more than 20 years and active in the South African Guild of Editors for ten years. Meyburgh has been involved in training young film editors and has directed and edited multiple documentary and short films that include Alan Paton's Beloved Country, The Clay Ox, and Nelson Mandela: The Myth & Me. Her work intelevision includes the drama series Yizo Yizo, Tolerance, Soul City, and Mandiba: A Hero for All Seasons.
Sabine Theunissen has previously worked for La Scala as a set assistant on productions of Verdi's Don Carlo, Don Giovanni, Falstaff, Giordano's Fedora, and von Weber's Oberon. From 1995 to 2007, she worked in the technical office of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie serving as set assistant for numerous productions including Britten's Turn of the Screw, Verdi's Otello, Rossini's La Cenerentola, Tosca, Kris Defoort's The Woman Who Walked into Doors, Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, Monteverdi's Le Retour d'Ulisse, Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Così fan tutte, among others. Since 2007, Theunissen has served as production manager at La Monnaie. In addition to her work on The Nose, most recently she designed sets for Kentridge's productions of Schubert's Winterreise at the Holland Festival and designed for his installation, Refusal of Time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Greta Goiris has worked extensively as a freelance costume designer for theater and opera, with notable past engagements that include designing costumes for Kentridge's productions of Schubert's Winterreise at the Holland Festival, The Nose at the Met, and The Magic Flute at the Théâtre Royal de la The transmission, hosted by Deborah Voigt, was directed for cinema by Matthew
Diamond. The Met: Live in HD, the Met's award-winning series of live transmissions to movie theaters around the world, has expanded its worldwide distribution to more than 2000 theaters in 70 countries this season and has sold more than 19 million tickets since its inception in 2006.
Lulu was the fourth of ten live transmissions to be shown this season. The next live transmission will be the Met's new production of Bizet's Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers), on Saturday, Jan. 16.
In celebration of the tenth anniversary season, there will be a special encore holiday showing (select theaters only) on Saturday, Dec. 12 and varying dates internationally of Julie Taymor's whimsical, hit production of Mozart's The Magic Flute – the groundbreaking broadcast that launched the HD series in 2006.
