FairPoint expands broadband service
WINCHESTER, N.H. -- FairPoint Communications has expanded broadband service to more than 70 homes and businesses in town as part of a plan to extend high-speed Internet to the vast majority of its service areas in New Hampshire.
Sabina Haskell, a spokesperson for FairPoint, said the company made a commitment to the state to bring high-speed Internet to 95 percent of its coverage area by the first quarter of 2013 and first picks spots where the need is the greatest. This expansion is part an agreement FairPoint made when it purchased Verizon’s properties in northern New Hampshire.
High-speed connection areas include portions of the following streets/roads in Winchester: Forest, Forest Lake, Headlands, Hemlock, Lake Shore, Rabbit Hollow, South, Stone Mountain and Upper Headlands.
"We’re in the middle of a very large and very important expansion right now," Haskell said.
Jeff Nevins, FairPoint’s public relations manager for New Hampshire, said the expansion is "benefiting the state of New Hampshire right now."
FairPoint has since April 2008 invested more than $182 million in its communications infrastructure and technology to bring broadband to northern New England, including building thousands of miles of new fiber across the region.
"Broadband access opens doors to the world for the residents and businesses in New Hampshire and is fundamental to the state’s future economic growth," Pat McHugh, appointed FairPoint’s New Hampshire state president in 2001, said in a statement. "Our employees are working every day to build more broadband across the state. We are pleased to announce we have again expanded the availability of high-speed Internet to these additional homes and businesses."
FairPoint had most recently expanded service to Hinsdale, which also borders Massachusetts. Service was made available to more than 170 homes and businesses there.
Nevins previously told the Reformer 45,000 homes and businesses are expected to boast broadband by the time the project is done in 2013. He said the expansion allows for eligible customers to surf the Internet, download music and send e-mails with greater speed than those living in other section of the state.
