Fire breaks out at Burlington High's women's locker room


BURLINGTON, VT. >> After-school activities were canceled at Burlington High School after a fire broke out in the women's locker room that sent plumes of smoke throughout the building.

The Burlington Free Press reports <URL destination="">the Burlington Fire Department responded to the fire just after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

</URL>School officials say fire crews put out the blaze in the "A building" after a staff member had partially extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher.

No students, staff or firefighters were injured during the incident.

Fire Marshal Barry Simays says the fire extended from the second floor into the gymnasium on the school's third level. Firefighters worked for an hour to clear the building of smoke.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 worth of damage, including cleanup. An investigation is ongoing.
