Five area baseball, softball teams advance in tourney


BRATTLEBORO -- Three area baseball teams advanced to the quarterfinals with playdown victories on Tuesday.

No. 7 Brattleboro bounced 10th-ranked Colchester, 9-1, in the Division 1 bracket. Danny Richardson (8 K’s, 3 BB) went the distance for the win, while Kevin Tao had a couple of clutch hits for the winners.

Josh Donna went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and also picked up the win when No. 10 Leland & Gray surprised seventh-seeded Williamstown, 12-3, in a Division 3 contest. Donna fanned eight, Corey Nystrom added three hits, and Nick Bills went 2-for-4.

And in Division 2, No. 8 Bellows Falls edged No. 9 Oxbow, 9-8. The Terriers (10-7) will now play at No. 1 Harwood in Friday’s quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m.


Leland & Gray 15, Northfield 0

TOWNSHEND -- Catcher Elizabeth Gallup earned the game ball on Wednesday for teaming up with ace Elizabeth Symanski (9 K’s, 0 BB, 1 hit) for a near perfect game in this Division 3 playdown.

"She pitched really well," said coach Tammy Claussen of Symanski.

The Rebels racked up 15 hits on the day. Erica Cutts, Kori Coburn and Rachel Borgesen all went 3-for-3, Emily Thibault drove in three runs, and Jordan Gouger chipped in with two hits.

"I’m happy that we hit so well. It’s a really big confidence booster," added Claussen.

The victory by the No. 8 Rebels (8-9) sets up a rematch with undefeated Green Mountain, in Friday’s quarterfinal in Chester at 4:30 p.m. The Chieftains took the regular-season meeting, 8-4, in extra innings.

"I’m pretty confident," said the Leland & Gray coach. "All of the pressure’s on them."

Twin Valley 15, Twinfield 1

PLAINVILLE -- Colton Butler fanned six, walked two and fired a one-hitter to pick up the victory in Wednesday’s Division 4 playdown game. She also helped herself by going 2-for-5 with a triple and three runs batted in.

"She had a good day," said Wildcats coach Aaron Wood.

Savannah Nesbitt and Christina Moore each went 3-for-5 for the winners, with two RBI’s each. Natalie Herrick added two hits and two RBI’s.

"The girls played well. They played the way they are capable of," stated Wood.

The 6-10 Wildcats will play at No. 1 West Rutland in Saturday’s quarterfinal at 1 p.m.

Peoples 5, Bellows Falls 0

WESTMINSTER -- Steph Parsons had a pair of hits to pace the No. 6 Terriers, who finished their season with an 8-7 mark. Chelsea Wilder and Emily Stoddard each hit safely for Bellows Falls. Murphy Hicks (9 K’s, 3 hits) suffered the loss.

Burlington 11, Brattleboro 10

BRATTLEBORO -- Alex Fellows and Hannah Lynde each had a hat trick for the Colonels, who finished the season with an 8-7 record. See Friday’s sports section for Domenic Poli’s complete story and photos by Kayla Rice.

Post 5 Legion Tryouts

BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Post 5 Legion baseball tryout/signup will be held rain or shine on Monday, June 9, at 6 p.m., on Brattleboro Union High School’s Tenney Field.

Anyone born between 1995-1999 is eligible to play Legion baseball. Players from BUHS, Twin Valley and Leland & Gray are welcome to try out for the Post 5 team. A second tryout will be announced on June 9.

If you have any questions or can’t attend Monday’s tryout, call coach Wayne Wright at 802-380-0065.

The Post 5 team’s first game is June 17 versus Bellows Falls. The season will go until the last week of July.
