Freitas-Eagan, Meachen both qualify

THETFORD >> In the Division 1 cross-country state championship meets on Saturday, the Brattleboro boys and girls teams placed fifth and 11th respectively.

Isaac Freitas-Eagan (8th in 17:49) and Josh Meachen (11th in 18:00) led the BUHS boys and also qualified for the New England meet. Jonah Koch (34th in 18:42), Dan Burdo (52nd in 19:09) and Colin Costa-Walsh (56th in 19:19) also scored for the Colonels.

Sarah Gallagher wound up 20th in a time of 21:28 to pace the Brattleboro girls. Liz Morse (56th in 23:11), Catey Yost (62nd in 23:34), Molly Patenaude (83rd in 26:11) and Kata Blakeson (88th in 27:30) rounded out the team's Top 5.

CVU (19 points), South Burlington (67), Essex (115), Stratton (149) and Brattleboro (161) were the top five teams in the D-1 boys race. CVU (37 points) also won the girls team title.

Cody Tallent placed fourth in 18:32 to lead the Bellows Falls boys to a fourth place finish in the Division 3 meet. Nicolas Potter (19th in 19:49), Jackson Purdy (23rd in 20:01), Ian Wallace (38th in 20:59) and Cameron Joy (43rd in 21:20) completed BF's scoring.

Stowe (22 points), Northfield (74), Randolph (84) and Bellows Falls (84) were the top four teams in the D-3 meet. Oxbow (21 points), BFA-Fairfax (40), Thetford (56) and Stowe (75) led the way in the girls team scoring.

Bellows Falls freshman Lia Clark ended up 10th overall in 22:48 in the Division 3 girls race.

In Manchester, N.H., the Hinsdale boys placed 23rd in the NHIAA Division 3 meet. Daniel O'Melia paced the Pacers by taking 77th in 19:33, despite nagging back pain. In her first season competing, Rachael Girroir finished 62nd in 24:10 to lead the Hinsdale girls.
