BRATTLEBORO >> The Castleton University men's cross-country team began the 2016 season with runner-up finishes in the Southern Vermont Invitational in Bennington and the Castleton Invitational. The Spartans then took 20th in the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational.

Senior Patrick Gilligan, of Vernon, placed fourth for the Spartans in 19:05 in the season opener. He was going up against runners from Southern Vermont, Paul Smith's, New England College, Mass. Liberal Arts, Wheelock, and SUNY Canton.

Gilligan took 10th overall and was third for the Spartans in 29:53 at his school's home meet. Grandon Smith, Jonah Lavigne, Jared Wheeler and Kyle Dash also scored for Castleton.

American International, Connecticut College and Stone Hill were the top three teams in the UMass-Dartmouth Invite. The Brattleboro Union High School graduate finished fifth for Castleton in that 8K race.
