Girl Power: Girls on the Run set for May 21

BRATTLEBORO >> Girls on the Run Vermont will host its 17th annual Southern Vermont 5k Run/Walk, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, at Brattleboro Union High School. This celebratory event is the culmination of GOTRVT's 10-week, after-school empowerment program for 3rd- to 8th-grade girls, and is open for the community to participate as a runner, walker, volunteer, or sideline supporter.

This year, the Girls on the Run program — along with the new Heart & Sole curriculum for 6th to 8th grade girls — will reach more than 3,000 girls at over 160 sites in the state. Proceeds from the 5k event benefit GOTRVT's Every Girl Fund, helping to ensure that every girl in Vermont can participate in the program through subsidies to all participants and full scholarships to those girls who need them the most.

"We realize the economic challenges that families are faced with in Vermont," said Nancy Heydinger, executive director of GOTRVT, "and ever since I started the program in 1999, it's been amazing to see the outpouring of support from local businesses and individuals who believe in our mission — helping us to inspire the next generation of Vermont girls to grow into confident, healthy, and strong women."

The 2016 Girls on the Run Vermont 5k Run/Walk is presented by WKVT Classic Hits 92.7 with Fish in the Morning radio talent, Peter Case, leading the announcements during the event.

"It's hard not to support an organization like Girls on the Run Vermont," said Case. "Their program directly impacts young girls who are the future of our community. WKVT is happy to show our support for the girls' accomplishments at this event."

Along with Presenting Sponsor, WKVT, generous support for the Southern 5k comes from BlueCross BlueShield of Vermont, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Bodett & Co, C&S Wholesale Grocers, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Foard Panel, G.S. Precision, Kids VT, and Price Chopper.

Additional support for the Southern 5k comes from Brattleboro Orthodontic Specialists, Brattleboro Retreat, Brattleboro Subaru, Cota & Cota, Dave Manning, Inc., Deena by Design, Howard Printing, Leader Distribution, Northeast Home Loan, Oak Meadow, Pure Green Tees, River Valley Credit Union, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, and Trust Company of Vermont.

Early-bird registration for the Girls on the Run Vermont 5k Walk/Run is $10 for children and $20 for adults. Online registration is available at, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on May 19. Day-of registration will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Brattleboro Union High School, with entry fees $10 for children and $25 for adults. All GOTRVT program participants and coaches are already registered for the 5k event.

Volunteers are needed to help at the start and finish lines, water stops, and along the course. Individuals, families and groups — school clubs, sports teams and others — can sign up in advance to volunteer.
