Girls lax team opens Tuesday

BRATTLEBORO -- It's fair to say that lacrosse is in Shannon Garrett's blood.

The daughter of the winningest high school lax coach in western New York and a four-year starter herself at St. Lawrence University, Garrett is now in charge of the Brattleboro Union High School girls program.

"This team is on a mission. Lucky for them, they have all the right tools to complete this mission -- they have chemistry, the desire to learn and improve, and most importantly they have heart," said the first-year varsity coach. "I love this team and am excited to spend a few hours with them every single day. I wouldn't trade any of them for the world."

The Colonels, who made it all the way to the state semifinals last season, will debut at Hartford on Tuesday, April 8, at 5 p.m. Their home opener is scheduled for April 18, at 7 p.m.

This Brattleboro team consists of 10 returning starters, including Lizzie Clark, Katelyn Donovan, Alexandra Fellows, Haley George, Anna Gagnon-Burch, Hannah Lynde, Marissa Semenovich, Megan Siggins, Cassidy Stebbins and Gaia Uman-Borrero.

Semenovich and Uman-Borrero each have experience between the pipes. Siggins is a leader in the midfield, and Stebbins, well, she keeps everyone smiling.

"She pranked me on April Fools Day by wearing a full leg brace and told me she was out for five weeks," said Garrett, who then gave Stebbins a speech about staying positive before the junior began dancing and screamed ‘April Fools.'"

Garrett said that Clark has no limits for this season, that Donovan dreams big and nothing stands in her way, that Gagnon-Burch is a fierce competitor, that George is a true communicator, that Lynde has a heart of gold, and that Fellows eats, dreams and lives lacrosse.

"Fellows' dedication to the sport has paid off. I wouldn't want to defend against her. This kid can score from anywhere," added the first-year coach.

The Colonels have also added plenty of speed. Garrett says that Daija Germain can run like a deer, that Joamey Cancel usually wins all endurance/speed competitions, and that Megan Kinsman's lone speed is fast. She is also excited about watching multiple-sport athlete Abbie Lesure play.
