Goddard headed to JSC

BRATTLEBORO -- Brittney Griner and Ashley Goddard are a lot alike.

They play the same position, each averaged a double-double in points and rebounds during their final varsity season, and both of them decided to play college basketball in the same state that they grew up in.

Goddard, who has been a three-sport star at Leland & Gray Union High School, recently announced that she will attend Johnson State College in the fall.

"I am very excited to have the chance to play four more years of basketball," said Goddard. "Johnson State was the first and last college that I had looked at, and I am honored to say that I have chosen to attend there this coming fall. I am very excited for the opportunities that Johnson has to offer me."

The daughter of Rick Goddard of Sunderland and Duffy Chapin of Jamaica is the President of the National Honor Society at Leland & Gray and will be graduating with honors. At Johnson State, she will major in English and minor in Education.

"I am very proud of Ash. She works hard at everything she does," stated Chapin. "These years have been great and I am going to enjoy the future ones. And four more years of watching her play is my bonus."

During her senior season with the Rebels, Goddard averaged 11.3 points per game, 11.65 rebounds and 2.55 assists. In comparison, the 6-8 Griner averaged 27.5, 12.3 and 2.4 in her final year at Nimitz High School in Texas before going off to Baylor.

"I have had a solid six years at Leland & Gray. It is a great school. I have had many teachers who have inspired me. I feel prepared and ready to go on to the college level," noted Goddard. "My family plans on attending every game I have in college, so it will be very similar to high school ball in a way."

And Johnson State can certainly use a talented player inside after going 5-20 last season. The Badgers were led by Brattleboro Union High School graduate Mary Richardson, who started all 20 games as a freshman this past winter and averaged a team-high 12.8 points per contest.

Goddard has also been anchoring the defense for Leland & Gray’s girls soccer team and supplying the power for the school’s softball team. As a basketball player, she started for the varsity team all four years, made the Dream Dozen in 2012, was named a 2013 North/South game All-Star, and earned Marble Valley League 1st Team status as a junior and senior.
