Hinckle strikes gold twice

BRATTLEBORO >> Kayaker Heidi Hinckle of Putney teamed up with Michael Melnikov to win the K2 unlimited race and also took first in the Women's K1 ICF Open race at the recent Canoe-Kayak Nationals on the Connecticut River in Northfield, Mass. It was the first time the event has taken place in New England in 19 years and the races were contested on a 13-mile course.

Doug Howard of Townshend was the runner-up in the Senior K1 unlimited race, took the bronze in the Senior mixed race with Kristen Warner of Westmoreland, N.H. and wound up fifth in the Senior Men's C2 race with Del Cummings.

Sandy Harris of Spofford, N.H. had two great races. She finished second in the C2 mixed Open race with Matt King and she took third in the Women's Vet1 race along with Dianna Dugas.

Michael Fairchild of Brattleboro finished second in the Men's Vet2 C1 race. A bigger achievement was finishing first in the C2 men's race with Peter Heed of Keene, N.H. Fairchild and Heed beat the field by over three minutes, leading from start to finish. This was the fourth consecutive time they have finished first in their class.

Next year, the Nationals will be held in Iowa.
