Immigrant program out of fashion with candidates
MONTPELIER, VT. >> Gone are the days when Vermont political candidates cheered a promised big burst of development in the northern part of the state.
Now that federal and state civil fraud charges have been filed against the developers, the current gubernatorial candidates are condemning the situation.
Republican candidate Bruce Lisman is calling the state's handling of relations with developers Bill Stenger and Ariel Quiros unacceptable. Democrat Peter Galbraith is calling for an independent investigation of the state's roll.
Democrat Sue Minter says the revelations about an alleged "Ponzi-like scheme" show the need for greater transparency in government. Democrat Matt Dunne says the situation points to the need for a strong ethics commission.
Republican Phil Scott calls the news troubling at a time when faith in government already is low.
