Keeping it sweet at Top Tier Baking Company

BRATTLEBORO -- The Top Tier Baking Company is keeping it sweet in West Brattleboro.

Tucked away between a pizza restaurant and a hair salon is a tantalizing little place where one may indulge in sweet guilty pleasures. Britni Christiansen, owner, operator, and confectioner extraordinaire has created an oasis filled with cupcakes and cookies, with a little penny candy on the side, smack in the middle of the 7-11 Plaza at 1010 Western Avenue.

Greeted by wondrous smells of freshly baked goodies at the doorway and an inviting boutique ambiance once inside, customers know a heavenly experience awaits them. A six-tiered cake trimmed with fondant icing smothering all that luscious frosting and cake inside displayed in the front window shows off some of her handiwork.

Christiansen is clearly a determined and motivated woman who has known all her life that she wanted to bake. Beginning her venture baking custom cakes for birthday parties, bridal and baby showers, and weddings out of her home, she eventually grew her small business until it was too large for her kitchen, so moved her baking operation to its present location last March so that she could expand upon her custom cake orders.

Now she is open as a retail bakery shop where a big portion of her business is still cakes to order, but she also features cupcakes topped with her signature light butter cream frosting from her super secret recipe, and jars filled with cookies and penny candy, tempting the walk-in business. The eye is quickly drawn to a display case filled with a variety of cupcakes to drool over, ranging from Vermont maple spice, strawberries ‘n' cream, mango and pineapple to Malibu piña colada, and of course all-time favorites like chocolate decadence and red velvet and raspberry, just to name a few. She carries a number of staple flavors for those who like to stick to routine, but also mixes it up with different flavors daily for the more adventurous, taking advantage of fruits in season for her creations whenever she can so that there are at least 12 different flavors to choose from. Her bakery has become a favorite stop for students of Academy School as they make their way home after school.

She also offers other unique novelty items for that hard-to-buy-for person with a birthday coming up, or smaller items that make wonderful little thank you gifts or wedding favors.

The business-savvy Christiansen plans to keep her operation small and personal for now so she can keep her customers contented and happy. Word-of- mouth and a popular Facebook page presence has served her well to bring customers to her new business. She keeps them coming back as satisfied customers. She has also partnered up with Meaghan Fagley Photography to jointly offer a wedding package deal, and on Sundays she offers cupcakes at the discounted price of $2 a piece to help draw in new customers.

The hours at Top Tier Baking Company are Wednesday through Friday, noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Of course if perchance you pass by after hours and her sign is still out, you are welcome to stop on in.
