Kids in Coats kicks off donation campaign

Posted
BRATTLEBORO — The winter chill is upon us and United Way of Windham County is supporting families with warm winter outerwear through its Kids in Coats Fund. United Way is hoping to raise $50,000 for the 2018 winter season.

The fund was created after the Reformer Christmas Stocking ceased operations in the fall of 2015.

This year, UWWC received applications for more than 670 children through nearly 40 referral sources, such as schools, health and human service organizations, and state offices. Due to limited funds, the United Way was only able to support 437 children with vouchers for winter outerwear. But UWWC hopes the community helps it to serve even more families and their children next year.

To donate to the Kids in Coats Fund, visit www.unitedwaywindham.org; text "snowy" to 41444; mail a check to United Way of Windham County, PO Box 617,

Brattleboro, VT 05302 with KIC in the memo line; or drop a donation off during business hours at the United Way office at 1 Holstein Place in Brattleboro.

As in years past, donor messages will be printed in the Brattleboro Reformer and posted on the UWWC website.

There are also events throughout the next two months to benefit the Fund, including throughout November, people can bring their returnables to Putney Road Redemption Center and mention United Way/KIC; the top three nonprofits will receive a donation.

On Giving Tuesday, Nov. 28, the United Way has set a goal of 100 donations of $75 to help outfit 100 kids. Also on Nov. 28, from 5 to 10:30 p.m., as part of Dining for a Cause, 99 Restaurants will donate 15 percent of all guest checks to the Kids in Coats Fund. Those who would like to take part need to download a flyer in advance at www.unitedwaywindham.org or at the KIC Facebook page.

On Dec. 11, at 6:30 p.m., at the American Legion, Rotary Trivia Night's $20 admission fee includes a donation to Kids in Coats. The Rotary Club is accepting applications for teams of four to six players. All ages are welcome, but there is a cash bar. Admission fee includes dinner.

Ten local stores are participating in Kids in Coats this year, accepting the $75 vouchers. They include Experienced Goods Thrift Shop, Love It Twice, Whippersnappers, SEVCA Good Buy Thrift Store, Second Chance Shoppe, West Townshend Country Store Thrift Store, Twice Blessed, Northeast Mountain Footwear, Label Shopper and Sam's Outdoor Outfitters.
