Leahy to chair hearing on marijuana policy

MONTPELIER (AP) - Sen. Patrick Leahy is set to lead a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee looking at how to reconcile state and federal marijuana laws.

The Vermont Democrat, who chairs the committee, has scheduled a hearing with top Justice Department officials and others for Tuesday afternoon addressing the topic.

Leahy has indicated recently he supports flexibility on the part of federal authorities as they work out how to respond to recent referendum votes in Washington state and Colorado to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.

At the hearing, the panel is to hear from officials from Washington and Colorado, as well as Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Cole.
