Leahy, Welch to discuss dairy program

EAST MONTPELIER (AP) - Two members of Vermont's congressional delegation will be discussing resources available to help dairy farmers sign up for a new program to protect them from losses.

The Dairy Margin Protection program gives participating farmers financial help if the difference between the cost of feed and what farmers are paid for their milk falls below a certain level. Farmers pay a yearly fee.

Sen. Patrick Leahy and Rep. Peter Welch will discuss the voluntary program Thursday at Fairmount Farms in East Montpelier.

The program replaces the Milk Income Loss Contract program and is part of the 2014 Farm Bill.
