Leland & Gray boys, Hinsdale girls win again

BRANDON -- Point guard Billy Nupp turned the ball over just once and scored nine points to help the Leland & Gray boys basketball team to a 52-46 victory over Otter Valley on Friday.

"He’s becoming our general...our team leader," said first-year coach Andrew Nystrom of Nupp. "We have been talking about the importance of taking care of the basketball."

Drew Barnum had a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) and added five steals for the winners. Mike Bergeron finished with eight points and 11 boards.

"I’m really happy with the way we executed after making halftime adjustments," noted Nystrom, whose team finished with 48 rebounds. "We played a super game."

The 6-1 Rebels will get plenty of rest before their next contest, which is scheduled for Friday at home at 7:30 p.m.

Girls Basketball

CONCORD -- Skylar Bonnette went off for 14 points to help the Pacers improve to a perfect 7-0. Allison Scott followed with a dozen points for Hinsdale, which went ahead 21-1 in the opening quarter. The Pacers will play at Newport on Monday.

College basketball

Four former Twin Valley players, Bellows Falls graduate Dammy Mustapha and Vernon’s Mary Richardson are all making noise at the college level.

Junior guard Candon Rusin is third on the 8-5 UVM men’s team in scoring at 8.1 points per game. Scott Hayford is averaging 7.1 points per game for 7-3 Nazareth College, while senior Tarryn Bolognani is averaging 8.4 points per game for 11-0 Castleton State College and Devon Spirka (10 ppg, 4.8 apg, 5 rpg) has been in a zone at Nichols College.

Mustpha, a senior forward at Castleton State, is averaging 9.2 points and 6.5 rebounds. Richardson had 12 points and six assists for Johnson State College on Friday.

Grade 7 Hoops

TOWNSHEND -- Mariah Hazard and Julianne Leibow each poured in 16 points to lead Leland & Gray to a 38-11 decision over Green Mountain on Friday. Morgan Stevens, Kassidy Wyman and Kelsi Bostrom all play good defense for the 3-1 Rebels.

Luke Dugrenier and Pat MacDonald both had 14 points as the Leland & Gray boys trounced Green Mountain, 52-29. John Peoso chipped in with a dozen points for the 3-1 Rebel boys.
