Letter: Just observe the traffic

Just observe the traffic

Editor of the Reformer:

Better solutions cannot be found by asking a designer of the downtown Brattleboro traffic lights to critique his design ("Brattleboro Select Board discusses downtown traffic lights," March 10).

Better solutions can be found by watching what is happening when southbound traffic is stalled from the Common to Malfunction Junction. When the southbound traffic light at High Street turns green, the traffic light at Elliot Street turns red. When it turns green, the traffic light at Flat Street turns red. Southbound traffic, already backed up from Malfunction Junction to the Common, barely moves.

If all southbound traffic lights turned green from High Street to Malfunction Junction, southbound traffic would flow.

Yes, there are other problems to solve, but the worst should be solved first, not ignored.

Howard Fairman, Putney, March 11
