Letting go and loving

Editor of the Reformer:

Recent major media news seems fully focused on a certain carnival-like quality of current political campaigns, which, for some of us, have become boring, crass and vulgar beyond the pale. Sadly, this obnoxious distraction has the American public withdrawn from and ignorant of the more critical current issue of global climate warming, which has already begun to destroy living communities and land masses. Interesting, isn't it, that we do not hear about these crises in the news?

Some local citizens, however, continue to focus on the real-life issues of environmental sustainability and our future in a world swamped with greed, and wanton destruction. Post Oil Solutions now offers our community a showing of the documentary "How to Let Go of the World (and Love All Things That Climate Can't Change)" by Academy Award Nominated Director, Josh Fox at the Latchis Theater, on Sunday afternoon, Oct 30, at 4 p.m. Please come. Admission is by donation.

While our whole community is invited to attend, I want to strongly encourage — and perhaps even challenge — Brattleboro's town officials: town manager and assistant, town clerk and treasurer, select board members, planning board members and town meeting representatives to attend this important and informative event. Since "Proper prior planning prevents pitifully poor performance," as they used to say in the Air Force, we still have a few precious "moments" to come together as a conscious group of caring humans to provide a plan for our future, a plan for when all the proverbial kukka hits the fan, or "all hell breaks loose."

Please come to the film and stay for the discussion afterward ... for a future of our own design.

Lynn Russell, Brattleboro, Oct. 13
