Letter: Price gouging in Brattleboro

Price gouging in Brattleboro

Editor of the Reformer:

You don't need to be a Socialist to be concerned. Price gouging is nasty and even though gasoline prices are down, once again the local dealers are bleeding Brattleboro residents. Look around. Gasoline prices in neighboring Massachusetts and as close as West Chesterfield, N.H., are more than 12 cents a gallon cheaper. Heating oil delivered from Keene, N.H., and Greenfield, Mass., is significantly cheaper. That makes it really hard to buy the transportation cost argument or the state tax excuse. Nope. Pure and simple — it's a matter of putting the screws to Brattleboro residents with excuses that range from storage costs to pricing zones. It may be time for consumer action via selective boycotts to send a message to petroleum dealers saying "We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it any more!"

Elliott Greenblott, Brattleboro, Feb. 15
