Letter: Vote no on the merger

Vote no on the merger

Editor of the Reformer:

The proposed merger of Bellows Falls and the Town of Rockingham comes to a vote on May 17.

At Bellows Falls first merger hearing a lone booster for merger suggested that the town of Rockingham could be likened to God. The good news is that scripture doesn't support that notion. We don't need the proposed merger — or anything similar. The town and the village are not adversaries. The local government isn't broken. The current governing boards do a good job overseeing the community's interests from their understandably different perspectives.

Voting for the proposed merger would be like volunteering to get cancer. The proposed merger exhibits many traits of a cancer: Unwanted, divisive, spendthrift, and brings with it a high risk of mutation. A merger will increase the town tax rate by 37 cents. A merger will open the door to additional tax increases as early as the next budget cycle. The Special Meeting voting takes place on Tuesday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Masonic Temple on Westminster Street. Please vote no on the merger.
