Local 'superheroes' invited to 8th annual Day of Caring

BRATTLEBORO — At the United Way of Windham County, caring is a super power.

United Way is inviting local superheroes from area towns, companies, schools and civic organizations to participate in volunteer service projects across Windham County on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon for its 8th annual Day of Caring.

Day of Caring superhero volunteers choose from a variety of service projects, using their super powers to address the needs of local organizations and public partners. Last year, more than 400 hours of volunteer time was logged in one day, demonstrating the caring super power of the community.

The day will begin for volunteers at 8 a.m. with a superhero-themed kick-off breakfast at the American Legion on Linden Street in Brattleboro, walk-ins are welcome. Volunteers are encouraged to dress the part and don superhero attire. There will be a superhero photo booth at the breakfast, prizes and an "Oath of Caring."

Then rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to noon, superhero volunteers will spread out to sites throughout Windham County to provide volunteer service. Just visit www.unitedwaywindham.org and click Volunteer to sign up for projects in Brattleboro at the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center, Brattleboro Area Hospice, Groundworks Drop In Center, Groundworks Shelter, Camp Waubanong, The Family Garden, Vermont Foodbank Distribution Center and the Winston Prouty Center for Child & Family Development; in Putney and Westminster with the Vermont Foodbank Gleaning Program; and at the Townshend Community Food Shelf.
