Man guilty of 1995 NY rape; DNA evidence surfaced in Florida

NEW YORK >> A man has been convicted of raping a woman at knifepoint in Manhattan's West Village in 1995.

District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. says Joseph Giardala will be sentenced Aug. 3 following his conviction on Monday.

The woman was attacked on Jan. 23, 1995, while walking home from a movie theater.

A rape kit was compiled, but there were no matches at the time.

In 2003, prosecutors secured a "John Doe" indictment listing the perpetrator by his DNA profile.

Last year, Giardala's DNA information was entered into the FBI's database following an unrelated matter in Florida. It matched the New York case.
