Marlboro Road collision closes road for an hour

BRATTLEBORO >> Around 11 a.m. a Freedom Express driver collided with a vehicle being driven by a woman on Route 9 West across from McKee Auto Parts & Recycling.

"I vaguely remember taking a sip of my soda, setting it down and then looked up and I was in opposing traffic, I tried to avoid it" said the Freedom Express operator "I do this road every day; I know the road like the back of my hand."

The Brattleboro Police Department, the Brattleboro Fire and Rescue Inc. responded to the scene and when police showed up they found the box truck heading east had crossed the double yellow line and collided with the Volkswagon Jetta headed West.

"When I pulled up I saw this gentleman (Freedom Express operator) sitting over on the side of the road, and the woman driving the Volkswagen was sitting on the opposite side of the road with her hand on her face," said Dan Nichols, who was the third person to arrive at the scene. "There were already people helping her; someone brought her water, and there was a nurse that was here."

The BPD closed off the road east and west bound while the drivers were taken care of by paramedics and while scraps of the vehicles were cleaned off the road.

"I just hope and pray that the lady will be okay" said the Freedom Express operator.

According to a press release from the BPD, "Both vehicles sustained substantial damage and the operator of the Volkswagon was transported to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital due to injuries received in the accident."

Route 9 reopened around noon.
