Memorial Day roundup
Memorial Day Services in Brattleboro on Monday, May 27, will begin at the American Legion, 32 Linden St., at 8 a.m. A bus will leave at 9 a.m. to hold services at the Kyle Gilbert Memorial on lower Main Street, Prospect Hill Cemetery on South Main Street, St. Michael's Cemetery off Oak Grove Avenue, the Vermont Veterans Memorial Bridge on Putney Road and at the Veterans' section of Locust Ridge Cemetery on Black Mountain Road.
Services will follow at the Brattleboro Common on Park Place at 11 a.m. Participating in the ceremonies will be American Legion Post No. 5 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1034 and its Auxiliaries; Marine Corp League Detachment No. 798; and the Post 5 American Legion Band. Guest speaker will be Bill Holiday, Brattleboro Union High School faculty member and historian.
A free lunch will be offered at the American Legion following the services for all those participating in the events.
In observance of Memorial Day, all Brattleboro Town Offices will be closed on Monday, May 27, with the exception of emergency services.
Parking will be free in all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday, May 26, and Monday, May 27. All other violations, including extended parking, will be enforced.
Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Sunday, May 26, and Monday, May 27.
Trash, recycling and compost pick-up for the week will be delayed by one day.
The BeeLine Bus will not run on Monday, May 27. Any questions should be directed to The Current at 802-460-7433.
The Brattleboro Housing Authority office will be closed on Monday, May 27, for Memorial Day.
All Dummerston Town Offices will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The town office will also be closed on Friday, May 31.
The Guilford Selectboard will not meet on Monday, May 27, as regularly scheduled in order to observe the Memorial Day holiday. The meeting will be held instead on Wednesday, May 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Guilford Town Office.
Hinsdale Memorial Day services will be observed on Monday, May 27. Members of the VFW and any other veterans who wish to participate should meet at the post house on Main Street at 7:30 a.m. The group will then proceed by motorcade to the town's cemeteries for services. Cemeteries visited in order are St. Joseph's, North Hinsdale, Hooker, and Pine Grove Cemetery. Anyone wishing to march in the parade should meet at the Pine Grove Cemetery at 10 a.m.
The parade will go to Depot Street bridge for a brief ceremony, then to Jackwood Park. The parade will continue down Main Street for a prayer and flag raising at the VFW and conclude at the VFW.
Any organization or club is welcome to participate. Some participants include the VFW and Auxiliary, Hinsdale Fire Department, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Pee Wee and Little League, and members of the Men's Auxiliary and the Hinsdale Town Band.

The Marlboro Town Office closed on May 22, and will re-open on Wednesday, May 29, for regular hours. The floors of the office are being re-finished over the Memorial Day weekend.
The Town of Rockingham will hold its annual Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 27, starting at 10 a.m. at the Hetty Green Park on School Street. After the guest speakers and wreath presentation, groups will form for the annual Memorial Day Parade which will end in the Square. The program will be hosted by the members of American Legion Pierce-Lawton Post No. 37, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion.
American Legion Post No. 16 will present a Memorial Day program on the Townshend Common at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 27. The parade will form at the Townshend Fire Station at 9:45 a.m. This will be an opportunity remember and to give thanks to all who served their country.
The Vernon Historians will hold their annual Memorial Day Service at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 27, at the Pond Road Chapel, 634 Pond Road in Vernon. The speaker for this year will be Don Streeter. His presentation is titled, "Defender of the Union a Vernon Boy Answers the Call." All are welcome to join the gathering to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country for the cause of freedom.
The Wilmington Memorial Hall Board has canceled its regular meeting scheduled for May 27 due to Memorial Day. The board will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, May 28, at 3 p.m. at the Wilmington Town Hall in the Meeting Room.
