Mount Snow's West Lake project on hold

WEST DOVER — The Mount Snow ski resort is waiting on funds to complete construction at a new snowmaking pond called West Lake.

"When finances become available we will install an inflatable dam in the Coldbrook, build two pump houses and a valve house and install underground pipe to connect from West Lake to our existing pipe that ends approximately in front of Haystack," said Mount Snow General Manager Kelly Pawlak. "We plan to start as soon as we have the EB-5 finances available."

Pawlak was referring to the program run by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. It encourages foreign investment in approved projects anticipated to create jobs in America.

So far, Mount Snow has raised $52 million through the program. That money is for the West Lake project but also a build-out planned at the Carinthia Lodge. Carinthia is a face at the resort featuring all of its terrain parks.

"Currently, the $52 million that has been raised is in escrow," said Pawlak. "It will be released by the USCIS and we have been told that the release will happen soon. Unfortunately, there is no defined timeline and we know that the USCIS has a backlog of projects to review."

Last summer saw the construction of the 120-million gallon pond and dam known as West Lake. A pipeline from Haystack Mountain to Mount Snow also was upgraded.

The improvements to the resort's snowmaking system were invaluable, Pawlak said.

"Greater pressure at the higher elevations allowed us to utilize more low-energy snowmaking equipment and make snow faster," she said. "Time after time, we were presented with short snowmaking-temperature windows and we were able to recover quickly and efficiently."
