New saloon opens at Stratton
STRATTON -- A new bar and restaurant is opening that management hopes will have something for everyone.
Whiskey Dick's Saloon Beverage Director Pete Christy said people can expect an affordable menu along with pool tables and live entertainment. Christy is also the beverage director for Mulligan's and Green Door Pub, similar establishments in Stratton.
On July 18, Whiskey Dick's Saloon will open to the public at 11 Ameden Road in Bondville. The festivities are set to begin at 3 p.m.
"We are ready to open," said Christy. "It should be a good time."
The name Whiskey Dick's Saloon is a tribute to Christy's great-grandfather, Richard Sullivan. He was a tavern owner, known in the hills of Ireland as Whiskey Dick.
An outdoor pool table was installed before the grand opening. Christy told the Reformer, there are "none like it in the state."
Managers plan to have a lively night time bar environment, which Christy likens to what an offspring of Mulligan's and the Green Door Pub would be like. In the future, there will be live entertainment hosted there on the weekends.
The new bar and restaurant will join the list of previous establishments that inhabited the building.
Built in the 1970s by "ex-patriots from Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard," it was originally called the Winhall River Yacht Club.
"They were all boatsmen during the summer and hung out here in the winter," said Christy. "It was a little tongue-in -cheek."
Afterwards, the building became known as the Outback. Christy said this was a popular place for people and families to go. It was around for quite some time, he added.
"Then it went dark for years," said Christy. "We saw an opportunity to bring back a neighborhood bar and restaurant."
For about two or three years, there was no activity in the building. Christy and other personnel contacted the owner of the building. They ended up leasing it in April.
In the last three months, Christy and other employees have been busy renovating, making it their own. The bar rooms, bathrooms and riverside dining have been updated for the new establishment.
On July 15, Whiskey Dick's Saloon received its liquor license.
