N.H. AG: Man robbed BF business; later shot, killed by police in Walpole
WALPOLE, N.H. -- An armed man who allegedly robbed a Bellows Falls, Vt., business before fleeing into neighboring New Hampshire was shot and killed by police on Upper Walpole Road, Friday night.
"The incident began with a report that a masked suspect had fled after committing an armed robbery," New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney stated in a press release, Friday night. "Officers from the Walpole and Alstead Police Departments pursued the suspect and were able to stop his vehicle in Walpole on Upper Walpole Road. In the ensuing confrontation, shots were fired by police, and the suspect died at the scene."
The road was closed for several hours as officers from the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit and Troop C investigated.
Earlier Friday, the Bellows Falls Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at Snow and Lear Newton Business in the Square at 4:16 p.m. Police scanner activity following the robbery indicated a pursuit with shots fired on the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut River. Emergency responders were initially called to the scene but later turned away.
A Reformer reporter on the scene observed personnel from the Walpole Police Department and Walpole Fire Department along with New Hampshire State Police Troopers. Yellow tape kept onlookers far enough away so that most of the activity was out of the public's view.
A lawn in front of a house behind the yellow tape was damaged by a vehicle apparently involved in the incident. That vehicle's lights were flashing and it was blocked off by the tape.
A press release from the Bellows Falls Police Department stated that, "during their investigation, officers learned that a white male wearing a dark mask entered the store and displayed a firearm to the store clerk where he demanded money. Witnesses observed the man flee from the store and get into a dark colored truck, which was parked a short distance away."
The Bellows Falls Police saw the man speed away from the downtown area where the robbery took place and then New Hampshire police in Walpole spotted him shortly thereafter.
The press release also stated that "the robber made off with an undisclosed amount of money and the store clerk was not injured."
The suspect's identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
