Officials considering closure of Bowers Covered Bridge

BROWNSVILLE, VT. >> The West Windsor Selectboard is considering closing the single-lane Bowers Covered Bridge, which has suffered structural damage in more than a half-dozen incidents in less than four years.

The Valley News reports Selectboard members discussed the potential closure at its Monday meeting and scheduled a site visit to inspect the bridge for May 4.

The 44-foot-long bridge carries Bible Hill Road over Mill Brook and was constructed in 1919.

Officials say the bridge was most recently damaged earlier this month when a small truck took out a wooden facade designed to prevent overweight vehicles from going through it.

Selectboard members were split on the closure. Chairman Richard Beatty called the bridge "an asset to the town" before saying that he would prefer to keep it open.
