Officials: Man dies in trench collapse at Hudson Valley home

NEW LEBANON, N.Y. >> Fire officials say a man has died after a trench collapsed on him near a Hudson Valley home.

Authorities say the Lebanon Valley Fire Department was called to the New Lebanon home on state Route 5 Thursday afternoon.

Chief Brian Curran tells the Hudson Register Star that the man was almost completely buried. He says the man was digging up a drainage pipe when he was likely crushed to death by dirt filling in the trench.

Curran says the dirt weighed about 3,000 pounds.

State troopers and emergency personnel were able to remove enough earth to clear his body to the knees.

State police have not released his identity.
