Officials: Roadside Vernon spring is not safe
VERNON -- Town officials say the water flowing from a popular roadside spring is not safe for human consumption.
Tests show that the spring, along Route 142 near the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, contains high levels of E. coli and coliform bacteria, Deputy Health Officer Annette Roydon said.
Both of those types of bacteria can cause intestinal illness.
Roydon said the spring was tested Thursday after officials received a complaint about a possible illness caused by the water. Results on Friday showed bacteria in the spring.
"It's going to be closed until further notice. Do not drink it," Roydon said.
The timing of additional testing will depend on the weather, she added.
