Officials to celebrate New Hampshire Apple Day

HOPKINTON, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan will be celebrating the start of apple harvest season by visiting a Hopkinton orchard.

The sixth annual New England Apple Day will be celebrated across the region the week of Sept. 1. Officials in each of the six states will visit orchards to hold a ceremonial "first apple picking" of the year event.

New Hampshire's ceremony is set for Thursday at Gould Hill Farm, owned by Tim and Amy Bassett. Hassan will be joined by Agriculture Commissioner Lorraine Merrill and representatives of the New Hampshire Fruit Growers Association and the New England Apple Association.

Many orchards are kicking off their pick-your-own season Labor Day weekend.
