Old bell calls worshippers to First Baptist Church
BRATTLEBORO -- Rung by a robust volunteer, the massive bell at First Baptist Church, 190 Main St., in the center of Brattleboro, once again calls parishioners to worship.
The records show that the bell was cast by Jones & Company of Troy, N.Y., at a cost of $1,800, of which more than $700 was raised by the Bible school. On the sides of the bell are inscriptions giving the date of purchase and the donors; also the Bible school motto, "Gather the children in" and the words of the Psalmist, "Praise ye the Lord." At the time the bell was said to have been the largest in the state, weighing 4,545 pounds.
Worship begins at 10 a.m. with Sunday School for all ages at 10:15 a.m. Pastor Suzanne Andrews will continue her series of sermons as parishioners walk with Jesus on His way to the cross and victory over death on Easter Sunday, April 20.
