Otters outscore Rebels, 7-1

TOWNSHEND — Right fielder Katie Coolidge put on a show in the middle of each inning on Thursday afternoon by continually going into the stretch and shaking off signs before winding up and throwing the ball to a teammate.

She also showed everyone in attendance her big league swing.

The clean-up hitter went 3-for-5, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three runs to power the Otter Valley varsity softball team to a 7-1 victory over host Leland & Gray.

"You have to give them credit, they are a good hitting team," said Rebels coach Tammy Claussen of the Otters. "We know that Otter Valley is always a solid team."

The hosts stole a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Jessie Stockwell blooped a single into right and then Rachel Borgesen drove her in with a deep triple to center.

But it was all Otters the rest of the way.

The visitors got RBI singles from Meghan Hallet and Gabby Poalino during a three-run second frame, Coolidge scored another with a ground-rule double in the fourth, Alyssa Falco singled and crossed the plate in the fifth, and Coolidge belted a two-run double in the seventh.

Otter Valley also had a number of defensive highlights. The Otters turned a double play in the first, got another twin killing in the sixth on a fine play by Poalino at the hot corner, and catcher Molly McGee later sprinted toward her own dugout to chase down a foul ball.

Winning pitcher Courtney Bushey, who gave up seven hits, finished with four strikeouts and three walks.

"We are capable of much more offensively. Hits are contagious. We need to string more hits together," noted coach Claussen. "We are a good hitting team in practice. With every game, we are getting more and more experience."

Erin Cutts and Stockwell each finished with two hits for the 1-2 Rebels, who will play at Mill River on Monday at 4:30 p.m. Borgesen, Boyle and Cutts all had an extra-base hit, while Olivia Brown hit safely.

Brown gave up 14 hits, walked three and struck out three. Abby Lowe made a couple of beautiful catches in right and Cutts (SS) hustled behind third baseman Mackenzie Boyle to rob McGee of a base hit in the third.

"I thought Olivia was pretty solid. If our defense had been solid, she would have faced less batters and would have been less fatigued," stated Claussen.

Poalino and Coolidge had three hits apiece for the 1-0 Otters.
