BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police in Vermont's largest city say three passers-by came to the rescue of a woman who was being assaulted on a Burlington street corner.

Police say the alleged assault occurred Saturday night at the intersection of College and Saint Paul Streets when 22-year-old Christopher Jerome tried to steal the woman's purse.

The woman fought off her attacked before three men detained Jerome until police arrive.

The woman was not injured.

Burlington Police Sgt. John Young said that police are thankful to the people involved, but they urge members of the public to be careful when apprehending suspects.

Jerome is due in court Monday.
