Person struck, killed by train in Brattleboro
BRATTLEBORO >> The Brattleboro Police Department has confirmed a woman was struck and killed by a southbound train about a quarter-of-a-mile south of the North Bridge on Friday afternoon.
According to Amtrak spokesman Mike Tolbert, at 1:25 p.m. train number 55 of the Vermonter, traveling south, struck a "trespasser on the tracks." No crew members or passengers were injured. There were 83 passengers on board at the time of the incident and the train is currently holding until investigations at the scene are complete. All passengers and crew members will remain on the train until it is released by investigators.
The Brattleboro Fire Department, the Brattleboro Police Department and Rescue Inc. responded to the scene. The call was made to Brattleboro dispatch by Amtrak. Arriving units discovered the body of a woman on the tracks approximately halfway between the Veteran's Memorial Bridge and Walnut Street in Brattleboro.
After the woman was struck, the train's operator activated its emergency brakes and stopped some distance after the collision. The train was delayed and remained on scene for several hours. Amtrak Police responded and assisted with the investigation.
The deceased woman has been identified by police but her name is not being released at this time pending notification of family. No foul play is suspected. The body was taken to the Vermont Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. Additional information will be released at a later time, including the name and age of the decedent and the cause and manner of her death.
